How do you give attempt to be critical of a phenomenal band on a phenomenal night? You canít. OPETH remain metal and progressive rockís true thing of wonder even with twenty years under mainman Mikael Akerfeldtís still-not-sagging belt. This DVD states it clearly that there are plenty of milestones ahead of the genre defying Swedes.

On this quite presumptuously subtitled ìIn Concert At The Royal Albert Hall Evolution XX: An OPETH Anthologyî, the Royal Albert Hall played host to what may have been the most significant stop on this six date US and European trek where the band played its now decade old career definer, Blackwater Park from start to finish. Then, after an intermission OPETH launched into a ìVH1 Storytellersî-like run-through of their entire career, picking a single song from each of their successive albums.

ìWe are bringing death metal into this hall of culture,î intones Mikael in typically deadpan fashion before the band launches into ìAdventî from their Morningrise album during the chronological second half of the night. What TLDOCBTPTB shows is a band at the peak of its chemistry and prowess. Compared to the two prior OPETH DVDís Lamentations and Live at the Roundhouse, the OPETH on view here is a band ready to leap to another decade of its career. Through it all, you do get the sense that the band themselves are blown away by the venue, the crowd and the night itself.

Not surprisingly, the filming is perfect as is the crystal clear audio-mix. The standard interview and ìOn The Road Withî segments almost detract from how amazing the bandís performance that night really was.

Akerfeldt does play the classic rock geek: telling the crowd about the DEEP PURPLE homage they are going to shoot as the DVD cover: the band seen from afar sitting in an empty theater. He then brings up a photo prog heroes Camel shot on a statue outside the venue. Clearly, hereís a man in love with a serious love for the rock of ages.

Oh yes, he is ìhumbleî enough to also let the crowd know that he also plans to ìsnort some coke and jerk off like Eric Clapton.î
He also lets the crowd know that the reason that an audience member fainted was because ìI am hereî. Oh, Aky! You are a card!

Then, as the band slides into the strumming of ìHope Leavesî from the Damnation album, you realize what a revelation in the possibilities of rock and metal OPETH truly are. For all of Akerfeldtís self-deprecating monologues, OPETH is truly one of the most innovative and continually barrier busting bands in the word today. Itíd be criminal if we donít see a thirtieth anniversary DVD.
