Early Years as Eric Wright
Eric Wright aka Eazy E was born on September 7, 1963 in the Los Angeles subhurb of Compton, California. The family consisted of the two parents, Eric and two siblings (a brother and sister). His father, Richard Wright was a postal worker and his mother Kathie, a grade school administrator. Eric grew up in South Central Los Angeles and was soon in the gang scene, a member of the Kelly Park Compton Crip gang. He started selling drugs and committing petty crimes, the proceeds of which he used to start his own company, Ruthless Records.
Eazy-E - The Rapper
Eazy started his music career with the group N.W.A in 1986. He released his first solo album, "Eazy-Duz-It" in 1989 and saw it go double-platinum and included the hit singles "We Want Eazy" and "Boyz-N-The-Hood". This was also a time when N.W.A. began to split up due to creative and personal differences between the members. Eazy continued to churn out the solo albums, with "5150 Home 4 Tha Sick" coming out in 1992 and his rebuke to Dr. Dre, "It's On (Dr. Dre) 187Um Killa" released in 1993. The albums "Str8 Off Tha Streetz Of Muthaphukkin Compton" and "Eternal E" came out in 1995, after Eric passed away. Two later albums, "Impact Of A Legend" and "Eternal E - Gangsta Memorial Edition" were released in 2002 and 2005 respectively, with the latter including a bonus DVD. Another tribute album titled "In Loving Memory" is supposed to be released in July 2006.
The Rivalries
The business and personal rivalries also played an impact in Eric's life. The split up of N.W.A. created several rifts with the most well known being the fued between Eazy and Dr Dre. In August 1991, Eazy-E filed a complaint against Dr. Dre and Suge Knight (Death Row Records executive) alleging improper practices used to get Dre and D.O.C. out of their contracts with Ruthless Records. As the fued was playing out in the court system, it was also going to become public with the two groups trading insults through music. Dr. Dre dissed Eazy-E in his famous solo debut album "The Chronic" and followed it up with Snoop Doggy Dogg's first record, "Doggy Style". Eazy-E replied with a whole album dedicated to discrediting Dr. Dre as a "eyeshadow, lipstick and sequins" wearing former member of the World Class Wrecking Crew. The album "It's On (Dr. Dre) 187Um Killa", which included an old picture of a decked out Dre on the inside label, was quite the success and went double platinum.
Eazy-E's Death
In February of 1995 Eazy-E was adimitted to LA's Cedars-Sinai hospital suffering from what he believed to be bronchitis. Instead, doctors discovered that he was HIV positive and the advanced stages with full blown AIDS. The one thing Eazy really liked were women and his success ensured that he was always surrounded by them. It is believed that he had children with atleast 6 or 7 different women, and was sexually involved with many more. It is believed that this promiscuity infected him with the deadly virus that took his life on March 26, 1995. Eric also married married his then girlfriend Tomica Woods, just two days before he died. Eazy-E (Eric Wright) was buried at the First African Methodist Episcopal Church.
During his final days, he met Dr. Dre though there were not indications that their fued was ever resolved. Years later in his album "Chronic 2001", Dr. Dre raps about their fued, Eazy's death and his possible regrets for not having sqaured things away - "Eazy, I'm still wit you. Fuck the beef, nigga I miss you. And, that's just bein real with you".
