Staebler, Edna - Food That Really Schmecks~Mennonite Country Cooking, 3d ed.

Edna Staebler grew up in a privileged household and eventually graduated from the University of Toronto in 1929 with a Bachelor of Arts degree. After college she worked until she married in 1933 and did what wives were expected to do—stay home. In the 1950s she decided to write a book, an idea unsupported by family and not overly encouraged by society. Staebler eventually wrote several very popular magazine articles and books, but avoided compiling a cookbook despite encouragement from friends and a publisher.

In the 1960s Edna Staebler finally decided to tackle a cookbook project as though it were research for another magazine article. She moved in with an Old Order Mennonite family in order to learn about Mennonite culture and cooking, and absorb their oral history through that process. From this fieldwork came the 1968 cookbook Food That Really Schmecks [tastes good]. Schmecks instantly became a classic, selling tens of thousands of copies. Its practical and memorable recipes are interspersed with stories and anecdotes about cooking, Mennonites, her family, and the Waterloo [Ontario] Region.

Edna Staebler died in September 2006; she was 101.
