1.Scum [1979]
This is the hard and shocking story of life in a British Borstal
for young offenders. Luckily the regime has changed since this
film was made. The brutal regime made no attempt to reform or
improve the inmates and actively encouraged a power struggle
between the 'tough' new inmate and the 'old hands'. The film was
originally made as a BBC play but it was banned before ever being
shown. So 'Alan Clarke' and 'Roy Minton' got it re-made as a film.
This is a tough and brutal film and should not be viewed lightly.
2.A Sense Of Freedom [1979]
A Sense of Freedom is a 1979 Scottish crime film directed by
John Mackenzie for Scottish Television. The film starred
David Hayman and featured Hector Nicol & Fulton Mackay, is a
based on the autobiography of Glasgow gangster Jimmy Boyle,
who was reputed to be Scotland's most violent man. Due to
non-co-operation by the Scottish Prison Service in allowing
a film crew access to their property, Hayman's scenes in
prison were filmed in Dublin's Kilmainham Jail.
3.McVicar [1980]
John McVicar was a London Bad Boy. he graduated to armed bank
robbery and was Britain's "Public Enemy No. 1". He was captured
and put into a high security prison. Will even the highest
security prison be able to hold him ? This is the true story of
his life, his criminal exploits and his eventual rehabilitation.
4.In the Name of the Father [1993]
Daniel Day-Lewis + Ireland = Awesome. In the Name of the Father
is an emotionally charged biopic that tells the story of the
wrongful imprisonment of supposed IRA devotee Gerry Conlon.
This movie features the most badass prison I have ever seen in
film, Kilmainham Jail. This jail is also the shooting location
of The Escapist, another fantastic prison movie that is also on
my list. In the Name of the Father, while not totally a prison
movie, has some great jail scenes, and provides a realistic and
brutal look at world of convicts.
5.The Shawshank Redemption [1995]
Andy Dufresne is a young and successful banker whose life changes
drastically when he is convicted and sentenced to life imprisonment
for the murder of his wife and her lover. Set in the 1940's, the
film shows how Andy, with the help of his friend Red, the prison
entrepreneur, turns out to be a most unconventional prisoner.
6.The Green Mile [1999]
Death Row guards at a penitentiary, in the 1930's, have a moral
dilemma with their job when they discover one of their prisoners,
a convicted murderer, has a special gift.
7.Hunger [2008]
Another IRA biopic, Hunger tells the story of Bobby Sands,
an influential Irish Republican who showed the world the
injustices that plagued the British prison system. This
raw and moving tale takes a genuine look at the controversial
Maze prison in Northern Ireland, and the mental and physical
boundaries of the body and mind. Hunger is a story of
debasement and embarrassment, so don’t expect a noble,
idealistic look at a man’s accomplishments. Hunger’s raw power
and viscous honesty make it one of the most realistic and moving
prison films of our modern era.
8.The Escapist [2008]
Frank Perry is an institutionalized convict fourteen years into
a life sentence without parole. When his estranged daughter falls
ill, he is determined to make peace with her before it's too late.
He develops an ingenious escape plan, and recruits a dysfunctional
band of escapists - misfits with unique skills required for their
daring plan and united by desire to escape their hell hole of an
existence. Much of the action takes place within the tunnels,
sewers and underground rivers of subterranean London.
9.Green Street Hooligans 2 [2009]
Following the deadly climax of "Green Street Hooligans,
"several members of the West Ham firm and numerous
members of Millwall end up in jail. The GSE quickly
discover the brutality of life on the inside, as they
are constant targets of the superior numbers and
better-financed Millwall crew.
10.Screwed [2011]
The film is a semi-biographical story based on the experiences
of former prison guard Ronnie Thompson who spent seven years
working in some of the UK's most dangerous prisons. Based on
Thompson's book of the same name, the project stars James D'Arcy
(Master & Commander), Noel Clarke (Kidulthood), Frank Harper
(The Football Factory), Jamie Foreman (Layer Cake), Andrew Shim
(This Is England) and Kate Magowan (Stardust). The story revolves
around former soldier Sam Norwood who takes a job as a prison
officer when he returns from Iraq and becomes exposed to the
underworld of prison culture - including corrupt guards and drug
11.Ghosted [2011]

him from going under is the new prisoner, Paul. Jack's cell

path that involves saving Paul from the clutches of the wing
beast, Clay. Jack struggles between the curiosity of the head
