Various Artists Be Bop in Britain - Vol 1 and 2Bop-In' Britain The Learning Curve Volume 1 Label : Jasmine Release Date: 1 June 2003 Format : Mp3@320The new changes in jazz improvisation in America, coming under the somewhat unedifying nomenclature of bebop, permeated rather slowly into the British jazz scene during the mid 1940s, partly because most of the more jazz-influenced big bands of the time were wary of its potential and longevity. Equally though was the telling fact that in those days what we now take for granted of American jazz groups working in Britain, and vice-versa, was unheard of, due to the counter-productive blockage on the exchange of British and American musicians by their respective Unions. A compilation of very early British Modern Jazz from some very obscure labels such as Bosworth and Paxton with other tracks coming from Decca and Melodisc. All were originally on 78 rpm discs recorded between 1949 and 1951 and were transferred to CD for re-issue.Tracklist:BOSWORTH MODERN JAZZ GROUPFreddy Gardner - tenor Johnny Douglas - accordion Howard Lucraft - guitar Steve Race - piano Mickey Rome - bass Roy Cooper – drumsRecorded London 14 March 1949 01 Rebop Rebels 02 Quintessence 03 Boppin' the Boogie 04 Baltimore BopSTEVE RACE GROUPLeon Calvert - trumpet Johnny Dankworth - alto Steve Race - piano Pete Chilver - guitar Jack Fallon - bass Norman Burns – drumsRecorded 31 August 1949 05 Vertigo 06 Marzipan 07 Bugle Call Bop 08 MicrocosmoALAN DEAN'S BEBOPPERSReg Arnold - trumpet Johnny Dankworth - alto Ronnie Scott - tenor Bernie Fenton - piano Joe Muddel - bass Laurie Morgan - drums Alan Dean - vocal Recorded 29 April 1949 09 Gone with the Windmill (Take 1) 10 Gone with the Windmill (Take 2) 11 Barbados 12 Elevenses 13 Ool-Ya-KooJOHNNY DANKWORTH SEVENJimmy Deuchar - trumpet Eddie Harvey - trombone Johnny Dankworth - alto Don Rendell - tenor Bill Le Sage - piano Joe Muddel - bass Tony Kinsey – drumsRecorded 18 May 1950 14 Lightly Politely 15 Strike Up the Band 16 Marmaduke 17 Little BennyRALPH SHARON SEXTETJimmy Skidmore - tenor Victor Feldman - vibes Ralph Sharon - piano Pete Chilver - guitar Jack Fallon - bass Martin Aston – drumsRecorded 27 March 1950 18 Burman's Bauble 19 Boptical IllusionTOMMY WHITTLE QUARTETTommy Whittle - tenor Ronnie Ball - piano Frank Donnison - bass Tony Kinsey – drumsRecorded 13 September 1951 20 All the Things You Are 21 Perhaps, Perhaps, PerhapsTOMMY WHITTLE SEPTETBobby Pratt - trumpet Roy Willox - alto Tommy Whittle - tenor George Hunter - baritone Frank Horrox - piano Johnny Hawksworth - bass Ronnie Verrall – drumsRecorded 23 October 1951 22 Wit's End 23 Portland Place 24 Sam's Say 25 Night and DayBop-In' Britain Volume 2 Label : Jasmine Released: 1 June 2003 Format : Mp3@320Volume I of Bop-In' Britain showed, in general terms, the almost surreptitious way in which the new trend in American jazz permeated our consciousness; the younger musicians, in the main, taking to it like the proverbial duck/water whilst the majority of the established bands men and/or swing musicians were far more cautious. This album, in continuing the story, shows that by the early 1950s, in spite of what was now little more than passive resistance from the earlier musical generation and, of course, the very vocal but ridiculous Trad-v-Modern lobby of those days, a growing number of working and highly articulate young musicians were showing that bebop had become their natural mode of jazz expression.Tracklist :VICTOR FELDMAN ALL STARSJimmy Deuchar (tp Ken Wray (tb) Derek Humble (as) Harry Klein (bs) Victor Feldman (vib) Stan Tracey (p) Lennie Bush (b) Martin Ashton (d) plus other rhythm.Recorded London 3 March 1952 01 Lullaby in Rhythm 02 Serenity 03 Just Friends 04 EuphonyARNOLD ROSS QUINTET/TRIOJimmy Deuchar (tp) Tommy Whittle (ts) Arnold Ross (p) Joe Benjamin (b) Jack Parnell/Tony Kinsey (d).Recorded London 13 June 1952 05 Janie 06 Darn That Dream 07 Speechless 08 Twelve to FourARNOLD ROSS SEXTETRonnie Scott (ts) Derek Humble (as) Jimmy Deuchar (tp) Arnold Ross (p) Sammy Stokes (b) Jack Parnell (d).Recorded London 3 August 1952 09 The Champ 10 All the Things You Are 11 Once in a While 12 These Foolish Things 13 Nice Work If You Can Get ItVIC ASH ALL STARSVic Ash (cl) Gerry McLoughlin (vib) Derek Smith (p) Johnny Hawksworth (b) Allan Ganley (d).Recorded London 16 February 1954 14 Softly as in a Morning Sunrise 15 Ain't Misbehavin' 16 Blue Room 17 Lullaby of the LeavesJOE HARRIOTT QUARTETJoe Harriott (as) Dill Jones (p) Jack Fallon (b) Phil Seamen (d).Recorded London February 1954 18 Summertime 19 April in Paris 20 Cherokee 21 Out of NowhereTONY HALL'S HALL-STARSJo Hunter (tp) Joe Temperley (ts) Kenny Napper (p) Sammy Stokes (b) Phil Seamen (d).
