Son House - In Concert (2011) FLAC
Recorded at Oberlin College, Ohio in 1965. This reissue is an incomplete version of this concert and, it is also noteworthy that in the tracklist are "new" names of his old blues repertoire, most of which he renamed during a concert, perhaps for the sake of fun. His 'mood' was great, and you can hear that on the record. He talks a lot, amuses the audience and of course treats them to his unique style of playing and singing the Delta blues
Eddie James "Son" House, Jr. (March 21, 1902 - October 19, 1988) was an American blues singer and guitarist, noted for his highly emotional style of singing and slide guitar playing. He was one of the most influencial Delta Blues artists
In 1964, a group of young white record collectors discovered House, who they knew of from his records issued by Paramount and by the Library of Congress. With their encouragement, he relearned his style and repertoire and enjoyed a career as an entertainer to young white audiences in the coffee houses, folk festivals and concert tours of the American folk music revival billed as a "folk blues" singer. He recorded several albums, and some informally taped concerts have also been issued as albums
The "re-discovery" of the folk-blues tradition in the mid 1960s brought a second wave of fame to many performers. Son House's career was given a new lease of life when the singer performed at regular blues and folk festivals around the US, which led to House playing the college circuit. The Oberlin College Concert, recorded when House was sixty-three, shows a mature artist, but one who had lost little of the menace and wonder of his earlier sessions. House performs long, rambling, revelatory versions of his best material, songs like "A True Friend Is Hard To Find" and the closing, apocalyptic "Preachin' Blues" in which House sounds positively possessed. Although listeners may find minor problems with the release -- House's voice is not quite as powerful as twenty years previously, but this release stands as one of the blues' finest live documents of the 1960s.
